Emphasize accountability
Accountability is essential in managing a business from afar. Mark Zokle suggests scheduling weekly meetings to discuss any recent issues that have arisen or offer praise for exceptional work. Some industries may benefit from daily “stand up” meetings, which are less formal but help set the tone for the day. Mark Zokle notes that following up with your employees once a month doesn’t accomplish much. Regular meetings allow you to put in place an immediate correction plan when needed. Tracking employee performance isn’t easy when you’re remote but Mark Zokle says it’s imperative.
Utilize available tools
If you want to be able to work from anywhere, you have to have the tools and resources that allow you to do so effectively. According to Mark Zokle, there are dozens of different programs, apps, and websites that help you stay connected and increase efficiency even when employees aren’t clocking into a brick and mortar location every day. Workflow management programs such as Jira and RedBooth let you delegate work and monitor its progress, says Mark Zokle. Likewise, online accounting makes keeping up with your accounts easy when you’re on the go. Mark Zokle underlines the importance of using communication tools (Skype, GoToMeeting, etc.) to help you get some face time with your employees. Another useful instrument in the quest for entrepreneurial freedom is file sharing software. Mark Zokle points out that Google has an exceptional program that allows team members to collaborate in real time.
Block off your time
Mark Zokle was self-employed for the better part of 20 years before teaming up with BCI Acrylics. In that time, he says one of the single most important lessons that he learned was efficient time management. This, says Mark Zokle, includes blocking off specific times for certain tasks. It’s very easy to get sidetracked when you’re not in a traditional professional setting. Mark Zokle also advises creating a dedicated work environment where you will be during working hours. If you’re going to travel, keep a briefcase with your work computer and all applicable documents with you at all times, concludes Mark Zokle.
